PhD Supervision

I am available as an external PhD supervisor for projects that include staff-based scores, graphic scores, live coding, installation work, and various combinations of multi media work. My own research specialism is in bringing BIPOC psychoanalytic frameworks and border phenomenology to composition. But I am happy to supervise work that is completely different from this and or expands on it. My supervision style is reflexive, holistic, and based on your needs as a PhD student. Get in touch and lets have a conversation!

Private Studio Teaching

I offer lessons in-person and over zoom for composition. Areas I am happy to teach include western European staff-based composition, text-based scores, graphic scores, electroacoustic music, and live coding using SuperCollider or Estuary. I also offer in-person piano lessons in a variety of styles including western European music, American Jazz standards, and free improvisation.

Advanced lessons for BIPOC folks who are interested in using composition as a liberatory tool are also available.

Teaching Philosophy

My approach to teaching is reflexive and highly customized to your learning preferences. I work hard to understand your goals and will help you to meet or exceed them within the context of your life. That is to say, if you work three jobs, we will do the work in lessons that is possible within the time available to you to devote to composition or piano.

At the heart of my teaching philosophy is imbuing a deep understanding for listening and what this may mean for you given your intersectional identities. Each sub-discipline within sound art commands a trained ear that can carefully decipher aesthetic, historical, and political relations to the Self and to our various communities. Regardless of the genre, style, or practice, I challenge students to listen and engage with sound critically through the creation of their own music and analysis of works by DYI folks, professional, and emerging artists. It is important to me that my students understand the various lineages of sound art they engage with so that they may form their own story, their own voice, and for them to locate themselves within a tradition that has been quite inaccessible to many. By centering the students and their experiences, I foster long-lasting relationships between students and their sound art making.

Rates

My usual rate is $60USD/hour though this is flexible and I have taken on students for free. Please reach out and lets work within your current means. I will never turn anyone away because of a lack of funds.
